Did you know that 73% of children who are sexually abused do not report the abuse for at least a year? Did you know that the median age of molested children is 9 years old? How can parents and caregivers recognize the signs of sexual abuse and what should they do about it? Darkness to Light is a national program whose mission is to end childhood sexual abuse. From the organization’s website: The ultimate mission of D2L, to end childhood sexual abuse, can only be accomplished by sharing the solution of prevention, awareness and education with more and more people. We believe that learning the facts about childhood sexual abuse helps prevent it. Talking about it helps prevent it. Getting involved helps prevent it. The truth is, if childhood sexual abuse can be prevented, it can be stopped. That’s why D2L exists – to empower adults through awareness and educational programs to prevent, recognize and react responsibly to childhood sexual abuse.

Zoar’s Cherish Our Children group offered a FREE Darkness to Light: Stewards of Children educational event on June 13 at 7 p.m. A second event may be offered in 2014. Contact the Church Office.

COC_logoCherish All Children is a national Lutheran ministry of prayer, education, relationship-building and action to prevent child sexual exploitation, a form of human trafficking. The heart of Cherish All Children is in congregations, where leaders work in teams to pray, speak and act on behalf of children in the congregation and community.

Zoar's program began in 2011. We have sponsored the following outreach events:

We developed a prayer ministry for our congregation's children. We always need more pray-ers, so contact the Church Office if you are willing to pray for a child.

In May 2012, we hosted a community forum featuring Dr. Celia Williamson, a local expert on human trafficking. You can see her power point presentation here.

In August 2012, we hosted a r.a.d.KIDS event, a four-day event for elementary-aged children that teaches children ways to defend themselves from abuse, abduction, and exploitation. Our 2013 r.a.d.KIDS event is scheduled for August 5-8. Contact the Church Office for more information or to register your child. You can learn more about this national program at the r.a.d.KIDS website

In November 2012 and May 2013, we hosted a community viewing of the film Sex + Money, a documentary on human trafficking in the United States.

We provided a free educational event entitled Steward of Children, a program to help adults identify children who are being sexually abused and what to do.

Education for parents and teens on preventing sexual abuse and internet safety is being planned for 2013.

large_praying_handsA key component of our ministry is prayer. Zoar has more than 500 children under the age of 18. Each child has an adult member of Zoar praying for them on a daily basis. The adults know only the child's first name, age and gender. Pray-ers are provided a copy of the Cherish All Children Prayer booklet if they request it or are welcome to pray as they wish. A one year commitment is requested for each pray-er. Surrounding our children with prayer reminds us that all children are God's children and deserve love, protection and safety.
